Gov. David Ige and University of Hawaii President David Lassner will be the guest speakers at the 442nd Veterans Club banquet Sunday at the Pacific Beach Hotel in Waikiki for the 72nd anniversary of the formation of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
A French delegation from Bruyeres also will attend the banquet. The French city, which the Japanese-American soldiers librated during World War II, is part of the sister-city relationship established in 1960 by Mayor Neal Blaisdell. The city hopes to erect an educational center honoring the soldiers in Bruyeres.
Ige’s father served in the 100th Battalion, which became part of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, which is one of the Army’s most decorated units.
A special demonstration by the 2014 "Go for Broke" Award Champions, 8-year-old Asa Tadaki of Mililani Hongwanji Judo Club and 10-year-old Caetlin Dias of Makiki Seidokan Judo Club, will be featured. The 50th State Judo Association has adopted the 442nd torch insignia as a way to honor the World War II veterans and to instill younger generations with the "Go for Broke" spirit. The chairwoman for this event is Mae Isonaga, daughter of Herbert Isonaga, one of the club’s founders.
Veterans and their families may make reservations for the luncheon by calling 949-7997.
This year the theme will be "442: A Legacy to be Preserved." The 442nd Veterans Club has commissioned a study to select a suitable site for what will be called the "442 Legacy Center." This facility will house the numerous archival records, photographs, DVDs, maps, memorabilia of the veterans, awards and other artifacts of the WWII unit.
