Hiker killed in fall ID’d as Navy sailor
A hiker who fell to his death off the Pali Notches trail Sunday has been identified as Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Johnathan McNeeley. McNeeley, a native of Lake Wales, Fla., was assigned to the destroyer USS John Paul Jones at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. He fell about 50 feet from the trail at about 3:45 p.m. The Navy said in a news release that McNeeley died from injuries he sustained in the fall.
Man seriously injured at China Walls
A 32-year-old man was in serious condition with multiple injuries Monday after being tossed by waves against rocks at China Walls in East Honolulu. Emergency Medical Services personnel said the incident occurred at about 11:15 a.m.
Man charged with burglary in hotel heist
A witness recognized a man who allegedly returned to a hotel where a room was burglarized Wednesday, police said.
Officers arrested the 25-year-old Ewa Beach man when the witness told police Leroy Garcia was seen entering a room at the Waikiki Grand Hotel where items were stolen.
Prosecutors charged Garcia with first-degree burglary Sunday. His bail was set at $50,000.
City identifies woman found on sidewalk
The Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a 55-year-old homeless woman who was found facedown and unresponsive on a Kailua sidewalk as Lori Checchio. The victim’s body was found Wednesday near the intersection of Hoolai and Puniu streets behind Kalapawai Market.
The cause of death is pending an autopsy. Police have classified the case as an unattended death.
