Elisa Favela’s arm has been humming all season. It was just a matter of time for her bat to catch up.
The Campbell right-handed pitcher went the distance in the circle and swatted two home runs, including a grand slam to give the Sabers a 16-4 victory Friday night in the Division I final of the DataHouse/HHSAA Softball Championships.
Favela scattered nine hits and struck out three with only one walk en route to giving Campbell (17-2) a companion state title to the one it won in 2010.
"We wanted to get revenge," Favela said. "They beat us in the OIAs. This feels so amazing. I’m so proud of all of the girls."
In the late stages of the season, several times Sabers coach Michael Hermosura said Favela was overanxious at the plate.
In the late stages of the season, Sabers coach Michael Hermosura said several times that Favela was overanxious at the plate.
Not so on Friday. Favela hammered an Aubree Kim pitch to left-center in the first inning for a grand slam that, along with a bases-loaded walk by Sierra Mariano, gave Campbell a quick 5-0 lead.
Mililani (15-3) fought back for three runs in the bottom half of the 30-minute first inning on Maya Yoshiura’s two-run home run swat to left and Kristen Ishii’s RBI single.
After that, it was all Sabers. They added four more in the second to make it 9-3 on Favela’s three-run shot to left and Nashlynn Anguay’s run-scoring single.
Then, in the third, Campbell struck for four more runs for a huge 13-3 lead. Mariano delivered a two-run double, and the Trojans allowed two runs to score on two errors.
"We won this championship for the seniors," Mariano said. "We wanted them to have the same feeling as Mililani had last year."
Ashlyn Yagin, Chardonnay Pantastico and Anguay all had RBI singles as the Sabers grabbed a 16-4 lead in the fourth.
"The community was really strong in support of us," Hermosura said. "If it wasn’t for the community, we wouldn’t have been able to do this. The girls accomplished what they came to do."
Mililani, which beat Campbell 4-3 for the OIA title on May 8, was going for its fourth state crown. The Trojans won states in 2005, ’09 and last year, when they beat the Sabers in the final.
The Sabers’ softball championship came six days after the school’s baseball team won its first state title since 1978.
In 1987, Kamehameha was the last school to win both the state baseball and softball crowns in one season.
