Hawaii was prescribed some frontcourt relief in the form of the medically inclined Sai Tummala.
Sources said Wednesday that coach Eran Ganot and the Rainbow Warriors have received an oral commitment from the 6-foot-6, 218-pound forward, who recently graduated from Arizona State with honors in biological sciences. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
Because he is a graduate student, Tummala will be eligible to play immediately.
Tummala, who is attempting to follow in the footsteps of his parents — doctors both — passed the MCAT exam in the 80th percentile in the middle of last season with the Sun Devils, paving the way for him to attend medical school. He is a 4.0 student and navigated ASU’s prestigious Barrett Honors College in addition to providing depth to the Devils’ front line the past two seasons.
Tummala took a visit to the Manoa campus early this week and apparently liked what he saw. Montana was believed to be his other primary option.
Former ASU coach Herb Sendek marveled at Tummala’s work ethic in a story on the Sun Devils’ official website last season.
"Every time I see Sai, he’s studying. We could be on the plane late at night returning, and there will be one light on," Sendek said. "It’ll be Sai. And he’s not back there playing a video game."
Prior to ASU, the Phoenix native was a standout at Salt Lake Community College for the 2012-13 season. He helped SLCC to 29-5 record and No. 5 ranking with 14.8 points per game and 41 percent shooting on 3-pointers.
Tummala was a backup for two seasons with the Sun Devils, including the 18-16 (9-9 Pac-12) squad of the recently completed 2014-15 year. He averaged 4.2 minutes in 14 games.
He began his college career as a preferred walk-on at Michigan, where he redshirted.
Tummala is the second recruit to commit to Ganot, after guard Bryce Canda out of Central Wyoming College.
