Police have released a 21-year-old Makaha man arrested after a car hit and killed a 57-year-old woman and injured her granddaughter Sunday and then fled the scene.
The medical examiner identified the pedestrian killed in the hit-and-run crash in Makaha as Gayle Peeples of Waianae. Cause of death is pending further tests.
Peeples’ 13-year-old granddaughter was also injured and taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in serious condition following the crash on Farrington Highway fronting Keaau Beach Park.
Police arrested the man on suspicion of fleeing the scene of a deadly crash, first-degree negligent homicide and driving under the influence of an intoxicant. He was released Sunday pending further investigation and not charged.
Police said a motorist was driving a vehicle Honolulu-bound on Farrington Highway at about 5 a.m. when it left the roadway and struck the woman and girl as they walked alongside the road. The driver fled the scene.
The man was found later, and his vehicle was recovered as evidence, police said.
Peeples’ death marked Oahu’s 23rd traffic fatality this year compared with 25 at this time last year.
She was the 10th pedestrian killed, compared with 11 at the same time last year.
