St. Andrew’s Schools trustees have engaged the services of a professional search firm to find a successor to Sandra Theunick, who has announced she will retire as head of the St. Andrew’s Schools at the end of June 2016.
Theunick oversees St. Andrew’s Priory School for Girls (kindergarten through grade 12), which is Hawaii’s oldest girls school, St. Andrew’s Preparatory School for Boys (kindergarten through grade 5), the state’s only all-male elementary school, and Queen Emma Preschool.
Having led some of the most prestigious private schools on the mainland for a quarter-century, Theunick came to Hawaii as a school administrator in 2007. She has served as head of The Chapin School in New York, Seven Hills School in Cincinnati, Forest Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in Seattle, and Stuart Country Day School in Princeton, N.J.
In a letter to the St. Andrew’s Schools ohana, Dew-Anne Langcaon, chairwoman of the board of trustees, said Theunick “courageously stewarded our school toward a revitalized mission and inspired all of us.” Langcaon said Theunick has had “an unflappable approach to problem-solving.”
Among her achievements over the past eight years, Theunick successfully led the St. Andrew’s Schools through a recession and the financial challenges associated with it; two accreditations; mapping of schoolwide curriculum; and the opening of the boys school (St. Andrew’s Preparatory School for Boys) in 2014.
