A two-alarm fire destroyed a single-family home in Kaimuki and sent an 89-year-old man to the hospital Wednesday.
Honolulu fire Capt. David Jenkins said the fire started at 11:20 a.m. at 925 Ninth Ave. About 40 firefighters from 10 companies arrived to find smoke and fire engulfing a single-story home.
Firefighters brought the fire under control at 1:07 p.m. and extinguished the stubborn blaze at 4:20 p.m.
An elderly couple who was home at the time escaped without serious injuries, Jenkins said. He said the couple was planning to stay with relatives.
Emergency Medical Services personnel treated the man and took him to a hospital in stable condition, an EMS report said.
Streets in Kaimuki near Ninth and Kaimuki avenues were closed due to the fire but reopened about 1:08 p.m.
Damage was estimated at $300,000 and the cause remained under investigation, Jenkins said. A neighboring structure sustained minor damage.
