Three people who died in recent fatal traffic incidents on Honolulu’s roads in the past week have been identified, and the cause of death has been given for a driver who had veered across the King Street protected bike lane, striking a cyclist and then a wall at Straub Clinic & Hospital.
The city Medical Examiner’s Office identified 54-year-old Cynthia Timtim Soneda as the jogger who died after being hit by two vehicles Friday morning while in a marked crosswalk on Kalanianaole Highway. Soneda may have been trying to avoid a separate car accident near Wailupe Beach Park when she was hit.
The Medical Examiner’s Office also identified 31-year-old Dale Kavulla as the motorcyclist who was killed driving the wrong way on the H-1 freeway Wednesday near Kahala Mall.
According to police, Kavulla had been traveling toward Koko Head in the center town-bound lane of the freeway when he collided with a sport utility vehicle. The force threw Kavulla, who was not wearing a helmet, into the opposite Koko Head-bound lane, where he was inadvertently run over by another driver, police say.
In addition, the driver of an SUV that rear-ended a truck in Wahiawa following an apparent hit-and-run incident was identified as Jimmie Dorsey Jr.
The Medical Examiner’s Office listed blunt-force injury of the head, torso and upper-right extremity as the cause of death for 83-year-old Charlotte Tamai, who hit the wall at Straub. Tamai had reportedly been trying to get to the hospital at the time of the crash.
Officials with the Medical Examiner’s Office say that trauma supercedes any other factors when determining the cause of death.
