Mililani coach Rod York’s team won so convincingly Saturday against McKinley he said the game should not have been scheduled.
The Trojans put up 56 points on only 16 offensive plays in the first half and McKenzie Milton finished 7-for-8 for 147 yards and three touchdowns in less than one half in a 73-14 rout of the Tigers at Roosevelt. It was the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I opener for both teams.
“We never should have played this game,” York said. “It was a mismatch. We wanted to play Saint Louis this week.
“It wasn’t fun for McKinley and it wasn’t fun for us. It wasn’t a fun game. Football is supposed to be fun.”
Mililani, the defending state champion and ranked No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10, scrimmaged Saint Louis, of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, last week. All OIA teams are limited to one nonconference game, and Mililani is scheduled to play Liberty in Nevada on Sept. 4.
In the first half against the Tigers, the Trojans scored touchdowns on their first six possessions. Mililani’s average starting field position on the drives was the McKinley 27-yard line. The Trojans also had punt and kickoff returns for scores before halftime.
Milton, who also scored on a 7-yard run on Mililani’s opening possession, completed a 10-yard scoring pass to Kalakaua Timoteo, a 15-yarder to Rico Sallas and a 54-yarder to Makana Tauai.
“I can get in a rhythm and the defense doesn’t have much time to set up,” Milton said of his team’s hurry-up offense. “That makes it easy to find holes in the defense if they get their call in late.”
Most of the Trojans’ key players were out of the game in second quarter. Mililani used three quarterbacks, and nine players caught passes.
“We didn’t even try to score and we put up 72 or whatever the final was,” York said.
McKinley managed just 135 yards of total offense, with 97 coming on a touchdown pass from Elyjah Badua to Nino Mitchell in the second quarter. The score made it 42-6.
“That team is very difficult to match up with, especially when you only have 40 kids,” Tigers coach Sam Cantiberos said. “I think my kids played great. They played their hearts out. Mililani is a great team. They will go very, very far. I’d be surprised if they don’t win it again.”
