A popular hiking trail in Aiea reopened Tuesday after a couple of weeks of repair following a rockslide.
Aiea Loop Trail offers hikers views of Pearl Harbor, the Waianae Mountains and Diamond Head. It was closed Sept. 29, after a rockslide occurred a mile from the trailhead.
State land spokeswoman Deborah Ward said the rockslide was caused by a large tree below the trail that toppled, its roots destroying the path.
“The tree uprooted the trail,” she said.
A Na Pali Coast State Park crew, which often repairs paths on Kauai, was brought in to fix the trail.
The 4.8-mile Aiea Loop Trail starts and ends at Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area. It has gradual uphill climbs with a steep switchback and a stream crossing before the end of the hike.
New York woman drowns at Kauai beach
A 31-year-old New York woman apparently drowned Monday at Lumahai Beach on Kauai.
Shortly before 4 p.m. Monday, witnesses called 911 after they saw the woman being swept out to sea from the mouth of the Lumahai River.
Within minutes lifeguards on a Jet Ski from the Hanalei Pavilion tower responded to the scene, according to a Kauai County Police Department news release.
“Investigators believe she was attempting to cross the river when she apparently lost her footing and was swept out,” police said in the release.
The woman was unresponsive when lifeguards reached her about 200 yards from the river mouth.
They immediately brought her to shore and administered CPR. Firefighters who arrived at the scene on the north shore beach also assisted.
A bystander with a pickup truck helped rescuers move the woman to a nearby parking lot. Paramedics transported her to Wilcox Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The death marks Kauai’s fifth drowning this year.
