Firefighters lug injured hiker
Maui firefighters rescued a 58-year-old woman from Pennsylvania who was injured Saturday while hiking the Pipiwai Trail with her husband.
Rescue personnel responding to a 3:08 p.m. emergency call in the Kipahulu area of Haleakala National Park located the woman, who had suffered injuries to both ankles, at the top of the trail near Waimoku Falls, 2 miles above the visitor center.
Firefighters carried the woman part of the way down, then drove her in a four-wheel-drive vehicle to Hana Highway, where paramedics were waiting.
She was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.
