The International Shark Attack File at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Fla. has confirmed that a 10-year-old Nanakuli boy was bitten by a shark off of Makaha Beach Park Wednesday, becoming Hawaii’s seventh shark attack victim of the year.

Raymond “Ray Ray” Senensi III said a 5- to 6-foot gray and white shark leaped out of the choppy surf, bit his right leg from the ankle to his upper thigh and dragged him off of his body board and under water about 50 to 60 yards from shore.

The attack ripped open Senensi’s inner right thigh and left lacerations up and down his leg.

He and two other 10-year-olds are Hawaii’s youngest shark attack victims, said Bruce Anderson, administrator of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources.

“This boy would join two other 10-year-old boys, both from Molokai, as the youngest shark bite victims,” Anderson said.

He did not have the dates when the other 10-year-olds were attacked.

Anderson said that George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research and the International Shark Attack File, reviewed photos of Raymond’s injuries and confirmed that a shark was responsible.

“It’s verified and confirmed at this point,” Anderson said.
