ILH champion Shelby Suzuki of Hawaii Baptist is going for it all.
Suzuki, a senior who won her first state title last year, leads the girls portion of the Billy Tees/HHSAA State Bowling Championships at Kauai Bowl with a pinfall total of 1,085 after the first six rounds. The final three rounds will be held today.
The Eagles lead Pearl City in the team standings 4,958-4,904. The Chargers have won the last four titles and Hawaii Baptist hasn’t won since 1974.
Suzuki leads Campbell’s Alexis Bardenas by 11 pins and Leilehua sophomore Gwen Maeha by 14.
Maeha and McKinley’s Chelsea Nakaoka had the highest single games, both rolling a 228. Suzuki’s scores were 204, 155, 189, 186, 185 and 166.
The last girl to win back-to-back state titles was Kalani’s Dara Ajamine from 2006 to 2008.
The Eagles’ squad also includes Shaynie Fukuda (11th place), Carissa Sugita (21st), Taylor Nakamoto (25th), Kaitlyn Matsushima (28th) and Kaylee Shiohira (53rd).
Pearl City led the boys team standings by 95 pins over Damien after the first round, with McKinley’s Jonathan Kanno leading the individual race by 12 over Bradley Nakamura of Pearl City. The Chargers have won each of the past five team titles. Defending champion Bryce Takenaka of McKinley was in 42nd.
