Parker Farris hit eight 3-pointers, tying a school record, to finish with 29 points, but it was not enough as visiting Montana State defeated UH Hilo 90-85.
Four Vulcans finished in double-digit scoring as UH Hilo erased a 15-point deficit in the second half and pulled within one. But the Vulcans never took the lead.
The Vulcans will next host Brigham Young-Hawaii on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
Chaminade inks Idaho guard
The Chaminade men’s basketball team signed Austin Pope from North Idaho College for the 2016-17 season.
Pope, a 6-5 guard, averaged 12.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game during the 2014-15 season.
Sharks come up short
Despite a strong defensive stand in the fourth quarter, the Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team fell just short against Central Washington, 51-49, in the final game of the Central Washington Crossover.
HPU trailed 37-33 at halftime after allowing CWU to shoot 59.3 percent from the field. The Sharks did better in the second half, notably in the fourth quarter, in which they held CWU to just six points.
The Sharks were led by Jenessa Manzano’s 11 points on 3-for-3 shooting from long range. Breanna Mackenzie and Brianne Yasukochi each added 10 for HPU.
HPU will play its home opener on Tuesday against Alaska-Anchorage at Moanalua High School at 4:30 p.m.
UH Hilo drops final home game
Hawaii Hilo senior Shelby Harguess racked up 10 kills to go with three blocks and two digs, but Dixie State defeated UH Hilo 25-27, 25-12, 25-17, 25-15 on senior night.
Marley Strand-Nicolaisen led the Vulcans with 12 kills.
After a hard-fought win in the opening set, the Vulcans fell behind Dixie State 17-5 in the second set and 20-8 in the third. Then, a 5-1 run in the final set allowed Dixie State to put the match away.
HPU downs BYU-Hawaii
The Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team put an end to its recent slide, defeating BYU-Hawaii 14-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-23.
HPU (14-12, 9-9 PacWest) had lost eight of its last 10 matches before this victory. The Sharks were led by Elizabeth Culpepper, who posted a match-high 15 kills.
The loss ended BYUH’s chances for a conference title. Kathleen Collette led the Seasiders (14-12, 12-6) with 15 kills.
Late run dooms HPU men
A 21-point effort from senior guard Chauncey Orr was not enough for the visiting Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team, which fell 69-65 to Alaska Anchorage.
The Sharks (0-2) held a 48-41 lead with nine minutes left in the second half. But an 8-0 run by the Seawolves (5-2) gave the home team a 57-55 lead it would never relinquish.
HPU will next play at home on Nov. 24 at 6 p.m.
