Firefighters aid hikers in Mokuleia, Manoa
Firefighters responded to two separate hiker-related calls, one lost and the other injured.
Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. David Jenkins said they received a call at 6 p.m. Saturday from a hiker who apparently got lost while hiking in Mokuleia. His age was not available. Firefighters told him to shelter in place for the night due to limited visibility and high winds.
At dawn Sunday, Jenkins said the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter headed to the North Shore and airlifted the hiker to the head of Kealia Trail by 7:15 a.m.
He did not suffer any injuries.
Later that day, fire rescue responded to a 25-year-old hiker who injured his right knee while hiking on Kolowalu Trail in Manoa. Jenkins said the hiker was with three other people when he suffered the injury at about 2:30 p.m.
Air One responded and airlifted the 25-year-old man and two other hikers from his group by 3:15 p.m. to the trailhead where they were met by paramedics. The fourth hiker from the group headed to the trailhead on his own.
