Kaimuki restaurant closes after just 3 months
Chef Lee Anne Wong, owner of Hale Ohuna in Kaimuki, announced on social media that she is closing her new restaurant today after just three months in business.
The restaurant at 3605 Waialae Ave. opened on Sept. 4 at the former SALT Kitchen site.
The noodle bar, whose name means “secret home,” featured a sake and whiskey lounge with an array of shochu, beer and wine.
“It is with the greatest regret that we close our doors permanently at Hale Ohuna today,” the restaurant posted on Instagram. “We are deeply grateful for all of our family, friends and patrons. Your enthusiasm and support is what made Hale Ohuna a home. Thank you making us a part of your ohana.”

I might have got there if I had ever heard of it… sad.
The restaurant business is hard to compete in. And, as we know, the monopoly party out here makes it hard to do any business. One of my professors took me to dinner at Roy’s last night and it was jammed packed. So, I guess the right formula helps.
3660 On The Rise has much better food and service than Roy’s.
ok..will have to see if he asks me out there….
3660 On The Rise used to have much better food and service than Roy’s.
Fixed it for you.
Does 3660… allow puppy dogs to visit them?
the thought of allie dating one of her professors just made me throw up a little
Now this made me LOL!!
dating? No, he is a friend. It was a one-time thing. He finds me witty, determined and insightful. But it is a friendship. A former professor by the way. Geesh.
Everyone has to start some where.
Chinese man once told me that throwing up food is wasting food.
“He finds me witty, determined and insightful.” good grief. the “determined” part I understand. most trolls are. but witty and insightful? I’ve never seen any evidence of that.
My Professor was Professor, Fun. And Checker and Pogo. Still got them hand full of pennies from that jar.
Don’t feel bad, allie. My high school teacher taught me some trick that I could use in college.
yikes!
Overpriced and overrated is not a good formula for success.
Kaimuki is hard to find parking.
Lots of parking around the corner. Don’t get out much?
Free parking?
Dude you know have to pay for parking. Kaimuki was cool at one time when parking was free and it was not over run by mainland transplants…
High roller Mike wants free parking and discounted bentos. Also known as Cheap Charley.
I might as well hang my dad’s blue placard for free parking.
Koko Head Cafe has gone downhill since opening and may be next to close. Overpriced for bland, not good food.
In the eyes of a doctor, bland, insipid food is the most healthest.
When you try to get fancy by naming your business with a name that can’t be remembered, and can’t pronounce, you will be in deep water.
“Ohuna”. No try too hard, brah, bumbye you going broke you mout.
the place was so secret (huna) people didn’t know about it.
The food comes out of the mouth at the hu part of ohuna with a mouth full of the ono, good food.
Is this considered news worthy, or is it a free community service from the SA?
Maybe it’s a reminder to all you liberals that it is not easy to sustain a business.
Darn… your post is beyond atupid.
My puppies liked his comment.
I don’t think it’s dumb at all. I always hear the liberals putting down the “rich” after the hard work people put in to make themselves successful. I’m just saying that it takes hard work and a lot of risks for the vast majority of these so called “rich” people to become that way. However, after the sacrifices, the liberals will make them out to be bad people who unfairly create “income inequity”.
Folks like the Koch brothers inherited their wealth. And they exploit workers and buy politicians to expand it. They haven’t worked hard one day in their miserable lives. You should maybe read your own name and start doing it.
Worthy of “front page” top news?
“Top News” (see the title) treatment for a 3-month-old restaurant? Imagine if it’d been around a whole year!
Doesn’t she have another restaurant in the area?
should have sold tacos instead
Depends what you put in the tacos?
Your dogs?
The long one or the short one?
Three months? Are you kidding me?
Seems that the owner did not do there due diligence in running a business.
stooopid
Three months is long enough to qualify for a tax write off?
Three minutes is long enough. What is your point with respect to taxation?
Typical SA article these days lacking in basic details. Is it too hard to do some follow-up on why it closed instead of just quoting an Instagram post. Ms Consillo’s reporting is terrible. The closing was mentioned elsewhere yesterday, so why can’t the SA do some confirmation & follow-up.
You think it’s your business why a private restaurant closed?
Well, it would help to know why to shut up loud mouths like dontbelieveinmyths (who amusingly actually does believe in a number of them).
Could be that the landlord raised the rent similar to how GGP did, or your line of credit got raised on the interest. Just because you signed a contract doesn’t mean there isn’t a clause where they can raise the rent on you. There could be a lot of reasons.
Calm down, chibiki… Nothing in the SA is worth getting upset over.
It’s only your stupid one liners that mean nothing. Must have plenty of free time for all your simplistic postings. At least David of Mililani had controversial substance. Different generation though.
david DOES controversial substances
Davis over did himself. All burnt out from all that cut and pasting. I’m a keep it simple, Sir.
Cholo: That made me laugh.
He totally does. Also probably controlled substances too.
I agree 100%. He’s got to much time on his hands. LOL
I heard the had great green shoots.
Green shoots like in them buds?
I just went there for the first time last week. It was crowded, the food was great – go figure?
We all have our first time moments in life.
Unless there are attempts from malevolent entities out there trying to obtain a share of the fruits of their labor!
Sounds weird, like kahuna prayer not welcomed?
Think “God Father”,
My fruits of labor consist of just my banana, and two Kiwi fruits.
All I can say is if this is one of the top stories in Hawaii, what a great place to live!
“She and her business partner, Kevin Hanney, opened their brunch restaurant, Koko Head Cafe, in December 2013 after she moved to Oahu from New York City.
Hanney, who is a partner in Hale Ohuna, also owns 12th Avenue Grill in Kaimuki and previously owned Salt Kitchen & Tasting Bar before its closure about a year ago.”

SERIOUSLY? Talk about all your eggs in one regional basket.
What pathetic report writing by SA – at minimum why not say WHY the business closed, don’t you think????
Honolulu just can’t bear to see the homeless in distress. But when a business goes under, our elected ones in Hawaii turn a blind eye. And I was only kidding when I said that only the losers here get the front burner.
