The announcement of Chef Lee Anne Wong’s Hale Ohuna restaurant came on social media today.

Chef Lee Anne Wong, owner of Hale Ohuna in Kaimuki, announced on social media that she is closing her new restaurant today after just three months in business.

The restaurant at 3605 Waialae Ave. opened on Sept. 4 at the former SALT Kitchen site.

The noodle bar, whose name means “secret home,” featured a sake and whiskey lounge with an array of shochu, beer and wine.

“It is with the greatest regret that we close our doors permanently at Hale Ohuna today,” the restaurant posted on Instagram. “We are deeply grateful for all of our family, friends and patrons. Your enthusiasm and support is what made Hale Ohuna a home. Thank you making us a part of your ohana.”

I might have got there if I had ever heard of it… sad.

Overpriced and overrated is not a good formula for success.

When you try to get fancy by naming your business with a name that can’t be remembered, and can’t pronounce, you will be in deep water.

  4. mikethenovice says:

Is this considered news worthy, or is it a free community service from the SA?

Maybe it’s a reminder to all you liberals that it is not easy to sustain a business.

Darn… your post is beyond atupid.

          My puppies liked his comment.

I don’t think it’s dumb at all. I always hear the liberals putting down the “rich” after the hard work people put in to make themselves successful. I’m just saying that it takes hard work and a lot of risks for the vast majority of these so called “rich” people to become that way. However, after the sacrifices, the liberals will make them out to be bad people who unfairly create “income inequity”.

Folks like the Koch brothers inherited their wealth. And they exploit workers and buy politicians to expand it. They haven’t worked hard one day in their miserable lives. You should maybe read your own name and start doing it.

Worthy of “front page” top news?

“Top News” (see the title) treatment for a 3-month-old restaurant? Imagine if it’d been around a whole year!

Doesn’t she have another restaurant in the area?

Three months? Are you kidding me?
Seems that the owner did not do there due diligence in running a business.

Typical SA article these days lacking in basic details. Is it too hard to do some follow-up on why it closed instead of just quoting an Instagram post. Ms Consillo’s reporting is terrible. The closing was mentioned elsewhere yesterday, so why can’t the SA do some confirmation & follow-up.

    • klastri says:

You think it’s your business why a private restaurant closed?

      • choyd says:

Well, it would help to know why to shut up loud mouths like dontbelieveinmyths (who amusingly actually does believe in a number of them).

Could be that the landlord raised the rent similar to how GGP did, or your line of credit got raised on the interest. Just because you signed a contract doesn’t mean there isn’t a clause where they can raise the rent on you. There could be a lot of reasons.

Calm down, chibiki… Nothing in the SA is worth getting upset over.

I just went there for the first time last week. It was crowded, the food was great – go figure?

  11. WizardOfMoa says:

Unless there are attempts from malevolent entities out there trying to obtain a share of the fruits of their labor!

  12. gojfam says:

All I can say is if this is one of the top stories in Hawaii, what a great place to live!

  13. choyd says:

“She and her business partner, Kevin Hanney, opened their brunch restaurant, Koko Head Cafe, in December 2013 after she moved to Oahu from New York City.

Hanney, who is a partner in Hale Ohuna, also owns 12th Avenue Grill in Kaimuki and previously owned Salt Kitchen & Tasting Bar before its closure about a year ago.”

SERIOUSLY? Talk about all your eggs in one regional basket.

What pathetic report writing by SA – at minimum why not say WHY the business closed, don’t you think????

  15. mikethenovice says:

Honolulu just can’t bear to see the homeless in distress. But when a business goes under, our elected ones in Hawaii turn a blind eye. And I was only kidding when I said that only the losers here get the front burner.
