Netflix and DreamWorks planning ‘Voltron’ reboot
Netflix is expanding its rights to children’s content from DreamWorks Animation in a deal that would bolster their global relationship.
Netflix plans to launch several new series produced by DreamWorks Animation in the coming year, including a reimagining of the ’80s animated series “Voltron” and “Trollhunters,” a children’s series from Guillermo del Toro.
The new provisions of their current multiyear deal will make the streaming platform the global home, outside of China, to a number of new original series from the studio.
“DreamWorks Animation is synonymous with great storytelling that families around the world enjoy,” Cindy Holland, vice president of original series for Netflix, said in a statement. “It’s with great pleasure that we expand on an already successful relationship with DreamWorks Animation to bring more premium kids and family television to Netflix members globally.”
Additionally, the deal extends the rights of current original children’s series from the studio that are currently in play in Netflix markets. The pact also expands the second window rights for series such as “Dinotrux” and “The Adventures of Puss in Boots” in Netflix’s global markets, outside of China.
Streaming rights to the DreamWorks Animation feature film library are also covered in the deal.

“This agreement adds to the incredible foundation we’ve built together with Netflix over a number of years across both film and television,” Ann Daly, president of DreamWorks Animation, said in a statement.
The announcement builds on DreamWorks Animation’s efforts to ramp up its TV operations so that it is less reliant on the performance of movies. Last year, the studio cut 500 jobs and overhauled management after a string of box-office flops.
