For 30 minutes, Kailua coach Walter Marciel’s team had the Kaiser Cougars where he wanted them.
Kaiser standout Chance Kalaugher, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound force, had fouled out. The Surfriders were within two points.
Then the visiting Cougars took command. Reserve Michael Miske sank two foul shots with 43 seconds left, and another reserve, Isaiah Akiona, added two more with 20 ticks remaining as No. 2-ranked Kaiser eked out a 49-41 win over the Surfriders on Thursday night.
Kaiser improved to 3-0 in OIA East play (17-3 overall). Keoua Mahiko led Kaiser with 17 points, including three treys, and added five rebounds. Miske finished with eight points on 8-for-8 shooting from the foul line. Six of those charity shots came in the final quarter.
“Miske’s a good player. He’s a good addition to that team,” said Marciel, who had three holes in his lineup.
Three players who participated in the Paradise Classic football exhibition game included Hano Kohatsu, who had just turned in a 23-point, seven-rebound performance in a narrow win at Roosevelt earlier in the week. Kailua slipped to 1-2 in league play (11-7).

Kalaugher picked up two fouls in the first four minutes of the game and never got into a rhythm against a strong Kailua front court. He finished with a season-low three points and five boards.
“We got the win, that’s it,” Kalaugher said, shrugging his shoulders about the consistently tight calls in the paint. “That’s how it is for me every game. I’m used to it already.”
No other Cougar was in serious foul trouble. Kaiser coach Branden Kawazoe warned his team before the game that it might be called conservatively.
“It’s all about adapting. We knew it might be called tight. Kailua’s big, physical and tough,” he said. “We struggled with that.”
Kailua’s Christian Mejia, a 6-4 senior, matched up with Kalaugher and finished with 14 points and seven boards. No other Surfrider finished with more than six points, but as a team they did enough to stay close.
When Kalaugher fouled out, there was 6:11 left in the game with Kaiser up 36-33. But as he walked off the court, Kailua senior Noah Auld waved goodbye at him, and he was whistled for a technical foul.
After Mejia made his foul shots to cut the lead to one point, Miske went to the other end and hit the technical free throws for Kaiser. That enabled the visitors to regain possession of the ball, and Mahiko answered with one of his three treys, a corner rainbow that opened the lead up to 41-35.
Moments later, Kaiser’s bench was called for a technical foul, and Kailua freshman Everett Kahapea-Torres swished both free throws. After Keoni Serikawa drove the baseline to cut the lead to 41-39 with 2:07 left, Kailua got no closer.
“For 30 minutes we played up and up with them,” Marciel said. “We talked about finishing. That’s been our problem all year, is (not) finishing strong. We didn’t take a charge at the end (on a Miske layup try). We went at Chance and Mejia did a nice job blocking him out and keeping him to one shot. And we did what we needed to do.”
Kaiser was outrebounded 29-24 — Kailua hustled for 12 offensive boards. The Surfriders committed just eight turnovers, shot 14-for-19 at the foul line and still couldn’t beat the OIA favorites.
“That’s a good team. They’ve got 12 seniors and we start two,” Marciel said. “It’s a good learning experience for our guys.”
