Hayato Kamata scored 15 points and Jaylen Cain added 13 as No. 6 Maryknoll fought off No. 3 Punahou 58-50 on Saturday night at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium.
Brian Washington, Maryknoll’s 6-foot-6 center, was a fortress in the paint with five points, 12 rebounds and three blocks. All four of his offensive boards came in the fourth quarter as the Spartans withstood a furious rally by the visiting Buffanblu.
The Spartans secured their first win of the season in ILH play to pull even with Punahou at 1-3 in league play. Maryknoll got a big second quarter from guard Michael Mercado-Smith, a former Division II guard who scored eight points in a row to break a 13-all game early in the second quarter. He swished two corner 3-pointers to spark a 22-5 run.
Punahou (16-5 overall) trailed 35-18 at the half and was still behind 46-31 early in the fourth quarter before cutting into the lead. After Chris Kobayashi sank a corner 3, the Buffanblu trailed 50-41 with less than two minutes remaining. Maryknoll (18-5), which had just one turnover in the first half against Punahou’s full-court pressure, got rattled and committed four in the final quarter.
After Kobayashi swished another 3, Punahou was within eight, and after Kaulana Makaula deflected an inbounds pass, Akahi Troske scored in the paint to cut the lead to 55-48.
Punahou deflected another Maryknoll inbounds pass after that, but Cole Mausolf’s 3-point try missed, and Maryknoll got free throws from reserve forward Kainoa Ferreira and Kamata to put the game on ice.
“We’ve got to play our ‘A’ game every game,” Punahou coach Darren Matsuda said. “But we didn’t play bad. Maryknoll played their best game. Mercado got his opportunity and rose to the occasion. He was a huge difference.”
The senior, who was promoted to the Spartans’ D-I team this season, also hustled for five offensive rebounds and dished an assist.
“He’s probably the best shooter on the team,” Kamata said. “He’s the most consistent when he’s wide open. Someone had to step up today.”
Maryknoll had lost its previous three league contests by margins of 2, 3 and 5 points. The Spartans made 17 of their 25 attempts at the free-throw line, a vast improvement. Coach Kelly Grant called this a key win.
“We’ve missed free throws all season. We had to brush up on our thought process when we got to the line,” he said. “Michael is our best pure shooter by far. I’ve been on him to be more aggressive. He’s got speed and shooting ability.”
Punahou shot 8-for-24 from the arc against Maryknoll’s man-to-man defense. Kobayashi led the way with 13 points. Troske, Mausolf and Cole Arceneaux chipped in nine points each. The Buffanblu attempted just four shots from the foul line, making two.
