Maryknoll has devoted portions of its practices to end-of-game situations.
The familiarity of playing through the final seconds paid off as Isiah Gelacio hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key with six seconds remaining to help No. 5 Maryknoll edge No. 3 Kamehameha 39-36 in overtime at the Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium on Tuesday.

“It helps all the time,” Gelacio said. “Every practice we end it down two, two minutes, down four, two minutes and we usually pull it out to win the game. You get used to it.”
Brian Washington scored 10 points as Maryknoll improved to 3-4 in the ILH. Kaeler Kahana scored 10 of his 15 points in the first quarter and Fatu Sua-Godinet added 10 for Kamehameha (4-3).
“They’re disappointed because we’ve been playing so well,” Kamehameha coach Greg Tacon said. “They just got to bounce back against Punahou on Saturday. Our method has been to move on to the next game.”
Gelacio hit the uncontested 3 after Michael Mercado-Smith missed an attempt from behind the arc. Kamehameha got the ball back and Sua-Godinet’s attempt from midcourt went off the rim. Gelacio’s winning basket accounted for the only points of overtime and the Spartans overcame 6-for-21 shooting from the free-throw line.
“He missed the shot. Fortunately my teammate got the rebound and Jordyn Perez kicked the ball to me,” Gelacio said. “I heard Coach Kelly (Grant) say ‘shoot the ball’ and I shot the ball.”
Kamehameha’s Kobe Young hit a 3-pointer from the right corner to tie it at 36 with 42 seconds left in regulation. Maryknoll’s Jaylen Cain was fouled driving to the basket, but missed both free throws with 21.6 seconds left.
Kamehameha got the ball inside to Young, who missed a contested shot with less than 10 seconds remaining. A jump ball was called during the scramble for the loose ball and Kamehameha got the ball back with 5.1 seconds. Gelacio tipped the inbound pass and the ball went off a Kamehameha player with 3.6 seconds left. After two Maryknoll timeouts, Cain missed an attempt from midcourt.
Maryknoll rallied from an early 11-point deficit. Sua-Godinet’s steal and layup forced Spartans coach Grant to call a timeout less than a minute into the second quarter. He wasn’t happy about their decision-making and missed assignments.
“I just told them it wasn’t about X’s and O’s but these guys executing, manning up, playing hard, playing through adversity, all those little things,” Grant said.
