The Hawaii Hilo softball team was picked to finish third — the highest among the four local Division II schools — in the Pacific West Conference preseason coaches poll, released Thursday.
Dixie State (144 points) was the unanimous selection to win the 12-team conference.
The Vulcans received 105 points, Hawaii Pacific came in fifth (93), Chaminade was 10th (35) and Brigham Young-Hawaii placed 11th (30).
The local schools didn’t have any players named to the All-PacWest preseason team.
Top men’s, women’s seeds win on Maui
The top-seeded players in the men’s and women’s singles draw advanced Thursday during the SportMaster Tennis Championships of Maui at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch in Kaanapali.
Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund, the men’s top seed, defeated American qualifier Michael Mmoh 6-1, 6-0.
On the women’s side, top-seeded Christina McHale beat fellow American Danielle Lao 6-1, 6-2.
The tournament runs through Sunday.
