Speed was determined to be a factor in a multivehicle traffic incident on Honoapiilani Highway that left a 57-year-old man in critical condition Thursday.
According to police, the injured man, a visitor from Gary, Ind., was driving a 2012 Hyundai Elantra north on the highway shortly after 1 p.m. when he crossed the centerline and hit the rear driver-side panel of a 2015 Nissan Altima operated by a 57-year-old man from Bedford, Texas, that was traveling south.
The Hyundai then continued north in the southbound lane and collided head-on with a 2015 Dodge Dart driven by a 45-year-old man from Brookline, Mass.
The driver of the Hyundai was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The four occupants of the Nissan and the two occupants of the Dodge were each taken in fair condition to the same hospital.
Furlough inmate goes missing
State deputy sheriffs and Hawaii island police are looking for a 35-year-old extended-furlough inmate who failed to report to the Hale Nani Reintegration Center for his scheduled check-in Thursday night.
Inmates in the extended-furlough program live and work outside of the facility but must check in throughout the month.
Daniel Abraham, who is classified as “community custody,” the lowest custody level, is serving time for first-degree assault, kidnapping and a firearm offense. Second-degree escape is expected to be added to his charges.

170 pounds and has brown hair and brown eyes.
