Hawaii baseball pounds USF in 11-3 win

Matt LoCoco’s three-run homer highlighted an eight-run fifth inning for Hawaii, which rolled to an 11-3 win over San Francisco today in the opener of a three-game baseball series at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif.

All nine starters had a hit for Hawaii (3-4), which scored eight runs in an inning for the first time since March 30, 2014, at UC Santa Barbara.

LoCoco finished 4-for-6 with his second homer of the season and freshman catcher Kekai Rios was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

Brendan Hornung (1-2) went seven innings, allowing three runs — two earned — on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts to get the win. He’s the first UH starting pitcher to make it through the seventh inning this season.

Senior Anthony Shew (0-1) allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss for the Dons (0-7). Shew had gone at least seven innings in 10 of 14 starts as a junior.

Jacob Sheldon-Collins singled twice and Eric Ramirez doubled to extend each of their hitting streaks to six games.

Ramirez has reached base every game this season.

Hawaii finished with 16 hits.

Game 2 of the series is Saturday at noon.
