American senior David Terao, a Mid-Pacific graduate, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 125-pound weight class at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships on Thursday in New York City.
Terao, seeded 15th, beat second-seeded Joey Dance of Virginia Tech 5-3 in the second round.
Earlier, Terao defeated Virginia’s Nick Herrmann 8-6.
Terao, who advanced to the quarterfinals for the third straight season, will face Stanford’s Connor Schram, the 10th seed, today.
UH’s Harrison finishes 13th in 1-meter
Hawaii senior Aimee Harrison received honorable mention All-America status by finishing 13th in the 1-meter diving event Thursday during the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta.
Harrison, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, scored 292.35 points in the B final.
She will compete in the 3-meter today.
‘Iolani’s Hogland wins Gatorade honor
‘Iolani junior Hugh Hogland has been named Gatorade Hawaii Boys Basketball Player of the Year.
Hogland, a 6-foot-9 center, averaged 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game this season in leading the Raiders to the Division I state title.
The award recognizes athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court.
Hilo baseball blanked twice by Cal Baptist
The Hawaii Hilo baseball team was shut out by Cal Baptist in both games of a doubleheader Thursday at Francis Wong Stadium.
In the first game, Dylan Stowell pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts and Tyler Johnson singled in a run in the third inning as the Lancers prevailed 1-0.
The Vulcans’ David Moody tossed a six-hitter.
In the seven-inning second game, Jeremy McDonald pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts and Johnson batted 4-for-4 in Cal Baptist’s 2-0 victory.
Hilo’s Eric Vega scattered nine hits in a complete-game effort and both runs he allowed were unearned.
The Lancers improved to 20-5, 10-1 PacWest, while the Vulcans dropped to 2-11, 3-12.
HPU softball splits with Academy of Art
Nicole Viena’s single to third base scored Kayla Sanchez with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Hawaii Pacific softball team beat Academy of Art 7-6 to earn a split of a doubleheader Thursday at Howard A. Okita Field.
In the first game, Brenna Mitchell singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Urban Knights prevailed 5-3. Academy of Art added another run on a throwing error.
Dominique Walker homered for the Sharks.
HPU moved to 10-16, 6-8 PacWest, while Academy of Art went to 11-12-1, 7-3.
Galdiano to golf in ANA Inspiration
Honolulu’s Mariel Galdiano was invited to compete in the LPGA’s ANA Inspiration junior golf event, which starts March 28 in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Galdiano, a junior at Punahou and three-time HHSAA individual champion, will join nine other female golfers from across North America in the tournament at Mission Hills Country Club.
