During a test dive last week, the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory recovered the bronze ship’s bell from the I-400 — a World War II-era Imperial Japanese Navy mega-submarine. After the war the sub was intentionally sunk by the U.S. Navy to keep its technology out of the hands of the Soviet Union. The manipulator arm of HURL’s submersible placed the Japanese submarine’s bell into a collection basket.
