“Project Runway All Stars” Season 5
Episode 7 recap: “Bait and Stitch”
In an otherwise uneventful season of “Project Runway All Stars,” producers seem to have set up a feud between Hawaii designer Kini Zamora and Boston upstart Sam Donovan, and in the March 24 episode there was no love between the two.
Each week, the contestants get their assignment before heading off to Mood to make fabric selections. This time they started at Mood, so they knew some twist was in play. Host Alyssa Milano met them at the store to remind them that fabric choice is everything, but producers took that choice away by having the designers pick an envelope containing the type of fabric they had to use to create an evening resort look.
Some of the choices were unusual, such as neoprene and upholstery fabric, and Hawaii designer Kini Zamora was assigned brocade.
A second twist was in store for them back in the workroom, where Milano told the designers they had to switch fabric with another designer. Zamora and Donovan were the last to swap, and neither was happy.
Of the two, Donovan had the better deal because he received a beautiful brocade while leaving Zamora with only three yards of a cheap-looking lace. Yet he kept telling Zamora how much he hated the “Disney princess” fabric.
Zamora lamented, “I can’t hide the hideous,” while struggling to come up with a design. When he voiced his grievances to mentor Zanna Roberts Rassi, she told him to “figure it out” and not make excuses.
Emily Payne had the same problem of coming up with an idea for limited yardage of upholstery fabric that Alexander Pope had chosen. But she got the sympathy story line after breaking down in tears, and finished third from the bottom.
Zamora managed to come up with a flirty cocktail dress and ended up, for the second week in a row, safely in the middle.
Donovan was named to the top three for a dress that, despite the weight of brocade, appeared light and flowy.
Dom Streater was named the winner for a linen ensemble that included a beach towel-style striped pattern that she pieced together with strips of blue and yellow fabric.
Valerie Mayen was sent home for a jumpsuit with tacky porno-costume strips for a bodice.
The intrigue heats up with tonight’s challenge involving a fairy tale princess creation, with Zamora teasing the episode on Facebook: “Ohhhhhhh next week the drama!!!!”
