Ciera Min picked the perfect day to shoot the round of her life.
The Gonzaga junior, a 2013 Waiakea alumna, shot the lowest score in relation to par in program history, closing with a 6-under 66 to storm back from eight shots down and claim individual medalist honors at the West Coast Conference Championships on Wednesday at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, Calif.
Min played her final 13 holes at 7 under, which included six birdies, an eagle and a bogey. She made the turn at 2 under after an eagle on the par-4 17th and then bogeyed No. 1, her 10th hole of the day, before closing with five birdies over her final eight holes to finish at even-par 216 for the three-day tournament.
“It’s pretty amazing to win today,” Min said in a press release. “My one personal goal this year was to win a tournament, and for this to be my first win is awesome.”
Min won by three shots to become the third Zags women’s golfer to take home a WCC title, joining Alice Kim, a University Lab alumna who won in 2014.
Brigham Young freshman Rose Huang, a 2015 ‘Iolani graduate, finished tied for second place at 3 over after closing with her third consecutive round of 73.
Huang shot even par on the back nine and picked up her fifth top-five finish of her freshman season to help the Cougars win their first WCC championship.
Pepperdine, which had won the past 14 WCC titles, had three golfers finish in the top 11, including senior Marissa Chow, a 2012 ‘Iolani graduate.
Chow closed with a 3-under 69 to post her best round of the event and finish all alone in 11th place at 7 over.
Santa Clara sophomore Kristin Le, a 2014 Punahou alumna, finished in a tie for 16th place at 14 over after struggling to a final-round 8-over 80.
