One twin said to the other, “I can walk across the street faster than you.” And the competition was on.
That’s the life of Kapolei juniors Jayson and Andre Pagurayan, two judo and wrestling competitors.
“Who can cook better, who does the chores better, who can do laundry better,” Andre said. “I’m definitely better at cooking and he is better at chores.”
Well, those competitions are pretty tame compared to what Andre called the “legendary fights” between the two.
“Somebody will get mad and we just wrestle or do judo for 20 minutes straight, so that is something to laugh at because we get mad for no reason,” Andre said.
Added Jayson: “Before states or OIAs, we usually go for five rounds straight trying to destroy each other for no reason. We’re not mad at each other. It’s just practice. He hits me or I hit him and get him back. Or if it’s judo, it will be throws. We’ll go a full 20 minutes until one of us just stops because we’re tired.”
That kind of work and friendly “animosity” toward each other, which is helped by Hurricanes coach Marc Narciso, has been paying off.
Both have a judo state title under their belts and are aiming for another May 7. They have also both been a force in state and OIA wrestling.
“It’s not just for me,” Andre said. “I am sharing it with my brother and that is something to really marvel at. I’m a twin and he’s really special to me and judo has always been in our hearts. He’s in my heart and we get to do it together and that’s kind of my twin time with him.”
Jayson called it “twinstincts.”
“So far in tournaments, he hasn’t beaten me once yet,” he said. “It’s funny because he beat all the guys I lost to in tournaments. Maybe because he’s my twin, so I kind of know when he’s going to fire, so I fire off of that. I beat him to the punch.”

Sharing this sporting life with his twin is something Andre does, but it’s about the only thing he shares, according to Jayson.
“He doesn’t share,” Jayson said. “He won’t share meals and he didn’t share toys when we were younger. But I always put him before me and care for him and share with him no matter what.”
They both called each other “best friends.”
Their father, Nelson Pagurayan, was a third-place state wrestling finisher as a senior, and he has tried to help cultivate the two champions. Two more Pagurayans are coming up the ranks in both sports — Brycen and Branden.
“Our dad helps a lot,” Jayson said. “He wants us to be champions and we’re trying to win championships, but also trying to make memories and have fun and no regrets.”
Narciso, the coach, is part of the family’s support system.
“I am like an uncle to them, put them through training,” he said. “They’re very responsible and excellent athletes and both are good in the classroom, with 3.3 GPAs. They’re great kids and I know they’re going to go far in whatever they choose to do.”
Jayson and Andre want to find a college nursing program. Competing after high school is doubtful, but both may help coach.
The Pagurayan twins think highly of the coach, too.
“Coach, he’s the greatest, making us work hard, always getting on the mat with us,” Andre said. “He sweats with us.”
Andre said he’s more “feisty and energetic” than Jayson, and that Jayson is more “calm and serious.”
“So together, we’re the ultimate duo,” he added.
According to Jayson, Andre is “quick to snap.”
“I’m more likely to let it go. He’ll talk back, but I really won’t.”
