Irene Gonzalez added Big West Freshman of the Year honors to her breakout season with the University of Hawaii water polo team.
Gonzalez picked up the conference award and a spot on the All-Big West first team after scoring 73 goals in 28 games to lead the conference with a 2.61 goals per game average. She closed the season by scoring eight goals in three matches at the Big West tournament last weekend.
Junior center Nikki-Marie Bell and sophomore goalie Ymane Hage made the All-Big West second team. Freshmen Femke Aan and Carla Abellan earned honorable mention for the Rainbow Wahine, who finished the season at 20-8.
Hruba named BWC top tennis freshman
Hawaii’s Marina Hruba was named the Big West women’s tennis Freshman of the Year on Wednesday and four Rainbow Wahine teammates earned all-conference recognition.
Hruba went 21-1 to post the highest win percentage in program history and was the lone freshman on the All-Big West first team. Junior Cindy Nguyen also made the first team in singles and was a second-team selection in doubles with freshman partner Roxanne Resma. The team of Klara Pribylova and Paulina Petriskova made honorable mention.
Inakoshi 12th at Big West tournament
Hawaii junior Skye Inakoshi shot a 4-under-par 68 on Wednesday to finish in a tie for 12th at the Big West men’s golf championship in Simi Valley, Calif.
Inakoshi jumped 16 spots on the leaderboard and closed the tournament with a three-day total of 2-over 218 to lead the Rainbow Warriors, who finished ninth at 40-over 904 at Wood Ranch Golf Club. UC Riverside won the conference title at 2-under 862. UC Santa Barbara’s Brandon Bauman was the medalist at 4-under 212.
UH’s Scott Yamashita tied for 32nd at 11 over and Cameron Kaneko tied for 34th another stroke back.
BYU-Hawaii golfers advance to NCAA final
The BYU-Hawaii men’s golf team edged Cal State Monterey Bay to qualify for the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship on Wednesday at the New Mexico State University Golf Course. The No. 16 Seasiders clinched the fifth and final spot when the Otters committed two bogeys in the final three holes. The Seasiders will travel to Denver for the Division II Championship from May 17-21.
Chaminade volleyball signs two recruits
Chaminade women’s volleyball head coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke announced Wednesday that Hannah Baker and Isabella Tessitore will join the Silverswords in the fall.
Baker, a 5-foot-7 setter, will transfer from San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas. Tessitore is a 5-foot-6 senior libero at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego. She helped lead the Falcons to a 35-2 record this season.
Kurokawa named Pitcher of the Week
Hawaii Hilo’s Jordan Kurokawa was named the National College Baseball Writers Association’s Regional Pitcher of the Week, announced Wednesday. Kurokawa threw his second complete-game shutout in a 3-0 win over Hawaii Pacific and allowed just one hit with nine strikeouts. The senior earned the same award in the first week of the season.
HPU, Hilo receive PacWest softball honors
Four softball players from Hawaii Hilo and a pair from Hawaii Pacific received PacWest All-Conference honors announced Wednesday. Hawaii Hilo’s Cristina Menjivar and HPU’s Kayla Sanchez were named to the first team, while Bailey Gaspar (UHH) earned second-team honors. Hilo’s Brittany Huff, Chenoa Au, and HPU’s Kiana Wolfe were third-team selections.
