A bases-loaded walk to DallasJ Duarte in the top of the eighth inning forced in the go-ahead run and Kamehameha-Hawaii won its first Wally Yonamine/HHSAA Division II baseball title in dramatic fashion, stunning Kapolei 5-4 Saturday night at Wong Stadium in Hilo.
It was the first state title for the Warriors (20-1) in four final-game appearances. The late-inning drama ruined Kapolei’s perfect season and what would have been the first state championship for the Hurricanes (15-1).
Kapolei was one out away from the victory in the top of the seventh when third baseman Corey Slade couldn’t handle Makana Aiona’s high pop fly. The error allowed Kamehameha-Hawaii’s Baron Victorino to score to tie it 4-4, sending it to extra innings.
Trailing 3-2, the Hurricanes got single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-3 lead. Andrei Stoyanow’s RBI double drove in Joe Uesato to tie it at 3 and Uesato’s sacrifice fly scored Issac Badua for what looked to be the game-winning run.
It was not to be. After the error tied the game in the top of the seventh, Kamehameha-Hawaii loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, chasing Kapolei starter Kamea Wong. Reliever Bradyn Yoshida struck out Kegan Miura for the second out, but then walked Duarte, forcing in Kalai Klask-Hoopii with what proved to be the winning run.
Kapolei made things exciting in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases when Tristen Manoha-Diaz was intentionally walked. On a 2-2 pitch, Yoshida’s grounder to third was bobbled by third baseman Makana Aiona, but Aiona recovered in time to tag out Stoyanow.
Daylen Calicdan picked up the win in relief for the Warriors, giving up one run on three hits, striking out two and walking three in 42⁄3 innings.
