An exhibit featuring the Hawaiian slack-key guitar and the musicians who made it famous is now on display in Hawaii following a star-studded premiere in Los Angeles in conjunction with the 2016 Grammy Awards in February.
“Ki Ho‘alu: Honoring the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Tradition” includes historical items such as Gabby Pahinui’s overalls, the Rev. Dennis Kamakahi’s trademark all-black performance outfit (complete with paniolo hat), Ledward Kaapana’s signature red boots, and guitars from Cyril Pahinui, Sonny Chillingworth and Raymond Kane.
Ala Moana Center and Bloomingdale’s have partnered to display the exhibit in two locations at the mall. The main exhibit is on display in Ala Moana’s Mauka Wing directly across from J. Crew-on-the-Island and next to bareMinerals. Additional exhibit pieces are located inside Bloomingdale’s first-floor cosmetics department.
Admission is free, and the exhibit will be open to the public from noon to 5 p.m. through June 30 at Ala Moana. Bloomingdale’s will close its portion of the exhibit May 25.
