Carver frees a pahu drum from famed tree’s trunk

    Brad Cooper, center, presented the pahu drum, Kaniala‘a, to Kaleo Paik, right, during a ceremony at the Hawea Heiau Complex site Sunday. Kaniala‘a was crafted by Cooper using a piece of Coco, a coconut tree that, before its demise, stood 112 feet tall.

Once the 112-foot-tall apogee of an imperiled cultural heritage site and the most popular tree in the United States, “Coco” the coconut palm tree returned to Hawea Heiau on Sunday in a new form and with renewed significance for the surrounding community. Read more
