Officially, it’s not a shaka. But it’s close enough, and people who use emojis will soon be able to send a hand gesture emoji instead of typing m/ when saying “shaka” in text messages.
Among 72 symbols approved by a committee responsible for setting emoji technical standards for all platforms is the “call me” hand gesture, which looks like a sideways shaka.
Other emojis coming soon are the fist bump, handshake selfie and so forth.
The “call me” hand is supposed to be used next to a face emoji to signify, well, “call me.”
But anyone who is familiar with Hawaii and its local culture will know what it means on its own.
The emojis are being officially adopted this month, with the June 21 release of the technical document known as Unicode 9.0. Google, Apple, Facebook and other apps are expected to roll out their own versions.
