An autopsy was conducted Wednesday on the body of the man who was killed in an officer-involved shooting Monday afternoon at a home off West Kawailani Street in Hilo.
The Hawaii County medical examiner determined that Kalyp Allen Rapoza, 25, of Hilo died from gunshot wounds to the head and body.
A pit bull killed in the same incident also died of gunshot wounds.
An officer fired his gun at Rapoza, who lunged at the officer with a knife, police said
The officer, who has been with the Hawaii Police Department for three years, has been placed on administrative leave under department policy.
As is standard practice in any officer-involved shooting, the Criminal Investigations Section is conducting a criminal investigation, and the Office of Professional Standards is conducting an administrative investigation.
