Gov. David Ige says he “(doesn’t) see why I wouldn’t (sign)” a bill appropriating $3 million for University of Hawaii
athletics.
The bill was passed by the Legislature last month and awaits the governor’s signature.
June 27 is the deadline for the governor to notify the Legislature of his intent to veto a bill. July 12 is the last day for the governor to sign a bill into law, veto it or allow it to become law without his signature.
When the bill is signed, Manoa and Hilo would divide the money.
Ige said the bill “is on my list of things (to review). I can’t see why I wouldn’t (sign) it, but sometimes there are things in bills that are more than appropriations, so we are in the process of reviewing it.”
Ige made the statement in reply to a question at Thursday’s Hawaii Tourism Authority press conference.
The money has been sought to ease the travel cost burdens for Manoa and Hilo. Manoa athletic director David Matlin has said the school has $5.2 million annually in “unique” expenses due to geography.
