Top-seeded Jesse Witten of Florida swept former BYU-Hawaii standout Rong Ma 6-2, 6-2 in the men’s singles final of the U.S. Open National Playoff Sectional Qualifying tournament on Sunday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Witten advances to the U.S. Open National Playoff Championships in New Haven, Conn., in August. The winner of the national playoff earns a wild card entry into the U.S. Open. Witten won the men’s singles title at the national playoff last year.
Punahou coach Ikaika Jobe partnered with Buffanblu junior Katerina Corpuz to claim the mixed doubles title with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Kawika Lam and Alyssa Tobita, both three-time high school state champions.
Eva Raszkiewicz of New York was awarded the women’s singles title with a walk-over win against Sara Tsukamoto.
Tree climber at today’s Quarterback Club
Competitive tree climber Jamilee Kempton will speak at today’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon. Kempton placed third at April’s International Tree Climbing Championship. She’s also an arborist currently attending the University of Hawaii.
The lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. at Maple Garden Restaurant with program to follow.
