None of the four Hawaii swimmers competing Monday at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials advanced to their respective semifinals in Omaha, Neb.
Punahou graduate Aukai Lileikis had the highest finish, placing 44th overall in the men’s 200 free with a time of 1 minute, 50.75 seconds. The California-bound Lileikis will compete in the 100 freestyle on Wednesday and the 200 IM on Thursday.
Also competing in the 200 free was Ryan Stack (Kamehameha/Wisconsin), who finished 66th in 1:51.93. Makoa Haneberg (Campbell/Pacific), who competed as Makoa Alvarez while in high school, was 87th in the men’s 100 backstroke (56.99) and Anu Nihipali (Hawaii Prep/Wagner) was 116th in the women’s 100 backstroke (1:04.14).
Only the top 16 advance to the semifinals.
Renny Richmond (Seabury Hall/Arizona) has qualified for four events, beginning with Wednesday’s 100 free. Kanoa Kaleoaloha (Kamehameha/Florida State) is entered in Friday’s 50 free, as is Richmond, with Richmond also in the 100 butterfly on Friday with Micah Ornellas (University of Hawaii).
Crabbs second at AVP event
Honolulu’s Trevor and Taylor Crabb finished second at the AVP Tour’s San Francisco Open on Sunday, the brothers’ third runner-up finish in five stops.
The Punahou graduates lost to top seeds Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson, 18-21, 21-15, 15-10, at The Embarcadero. Taylor Crabb had 17 kills and 17 digs in the final, and 23 kills and 15 digs in the semifinal win over Ty Loomis and Marty Lorenz, 21-16, 24-26, 15-12. Trevor Crabb had 14 kills, four blocks and three digs in the final, and 17 kills, four blocks and two digs in the semifinal.
The Crabbs have finished in the top three in all five tour events, including taking second at the Seattle Open earlier this month and at the Huntington Beach Open in May. The next event is the Manhattan Beach Open, July 14-17.
2 earn weightlifting gold
Hawaii lifters Maya Miyamoto and Hanale Kauhaahaa won gold medals at the USA Weightlifting National Youth Championships in Austin, Texas, over the weekend.
Miyamoto of Oahu won first place in the 11 under, female 39 kg weight class, while Kauhaahaa of Maui won the 11 under, male 50 kg weight class. More than 700 lifters in age groups from under 11 to 17 years old competed in the event held from Friday through Sunday at the Austin Convention Center.
