Waipahu’s Louis Smolka improved to 11-1 overall and 5-1 in the UFC with a second-round TKO of Ben Nguyen at UFC Fight Night 91 on Wednesday night in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Smolka, ranked No. 12 at flyweight entering the fight, landed 82 significant strikes in less than 10 minutes of fight time before Nguyen’s corner threw a towel into the Octagon as referee Herb Dean stopped the fight. Smolka bloodied the face of Nguyen and tried multiple submission attempts before finishing the fight from the mount position.
Wahine match at UC Riverside on ESPNU
ESPNU will televise the Big West volleyball match between Hawaii and host UC Riverside on Oct. 28.
The match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Hawaii time from the SRC Arena. The Rainbow Wahine are the defending conference champions, going 16-0 last season.
Hawaii opens the season Aug. 26 against Wisconsin at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Akau memorial shoot benefits food bank
Saturday’s annual Peter Akau Memorial Shoot archery tournament will include a food drive to benefit the Hawaii Food Bank.
Registration is from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Pu’u o Kapolei Archery Range with competition starting at 9:30 a.m. Entry fees vary with $6 off with a donation of canned or dry goods.
