Got head lice?
No need for students to leave school or stay at home while being treated — at least that’s the state Department of Education’s (DOE) new policy, which aims to reduce absenteeism.
Let’s hope that parents remain vigilant in treating their children’s head lice, or uku, as there’s still a chance it could spread to other students.
Uku are six-legged, wingless insects about the size of a sesame seed that live on the human scalp and feed on blood. Students should avoid head-to-head contact and sharing of hats, combs, hair ties, scarves and headphones.
At least a few parents are critical of the new DOE policy; about 1,200 people have signed an online petition in opposition.
Let’s see what the new school year brings.
We’re going nuts for Go Nuts White
Kudos to the Go Nuts White baseball team of Hawaii for making it to the final of this year’s 2016 Cal Ripken World Series in Aberdeen, Md., being broadcast today at 11 a.m. by Fox Sports 2 and streaming at www.foxsportsgo.com.
The team of 12- and 13-year-olds bested a strong field of contenders to represent not only Hawaii but also the Pacific Southwest. With its semifinal victory Thursday over Team Harford County, 13-3, the Hawaii youngsters now face Team Pacific Northwest of Seattle.
Coached by Al Carginilla, Chris Hino and Jim Stremick, Go Nuts White plays mostly in Central Oahu but its members come from Nanakuli to Hawaii Kai, and even one from Molokai.
Go, Go Nuts White!
