Oahu-based Thunder baseball won its Cal Ripken 13U World Series semifinal matchup against Sarasota, Fla., in a 12-3 rout on Wednesday.
Down 3-2 in the fourth inning, the Thunder stormed back to score the game’s final 10 runs. Jaron Yoshikane led the Thunder bats with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double, three runs scored and three RBIs.
Kelena Sauer earned the win, scattering six hits over four innings pitched with an earned run and a strikeout.
The team will face Mifflin County, Pa., in today’s championship game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
Hawaii Kai Boat Club returns from France
The Hawaii Kai Boat Club has returned from its summer European regatta tour, which culminated with the Bic 2016 World Championships in Saint-Pierre-Quiberon, France.
Coached by Kimo and Helena von Sydow, the team competed with more than 140 boats. Individually, HKBC took several spots in the top 20, including Lar von Sydow taking first in his division, second overall in the world competition and third in the German nationals.
Oda falls at U.S. Amateur
Honolulu’s John Oda was eliminated in match play at the U.S. Amateur at Bloomfield Hills, Mich., on Wednesday.
As the sixth seed in the round of 64, Oda was eliminated by Canada’s Blair Hamilton 4 and 2. Hamilton was the field’s 59th seed.
The tournament continues today with the round of 32, with the winner decided on Sunday.
HPU men picked to finish third in PacWest
The Hawaii Pacific University men’s soccer team was picked to finish third in the PacWest preseason coaches poll released on Wednesday.
The Sharks received two first-place votes and 154 points. BYU-Hawaii also received a first-place vote but was picked to finish eighth with a total of 102 points. Hawaii Hilo was picked 12th with 41 points while Chaminade was picked to finish last at 14th and 22 points.
Defending conference champion Fresno Pacific was picked to repeat. The Sunbirds received eight first-place votes and 188 points.
