I laughed out loud when I opened the packaging for the Hometown Bagel Knife. Inside, I found a gadget that is 14 inches long, huge compared to the paring knife I normally use to slice my bagels. Manufacturer Urban Trend does have another, smaller device to cut bagels. It’s called the Arc Bagel Slicer — which is what I thought I had ordered — and is much cuter than this device.

But since the knife is what I got, the knife is what I tested.

Does it work?: Yes. A serrated blade is attached to the center of the plastic device. Just slide your bagel into the center, making sure the blade is situated in the middle of your bagel. Using a sawing motion, slice through the bagel.

Pros: There’s a plastic cover for the knife; top-rack dishwasher safe; easy to clean although it is dangerous for children to wash.

Cons: It’s HUGE. Also, the blade is extremely sharp and requires extra caution. I cut myself while cutting my bagel (I wasn’t paying close enough attention), and when I washed the gadget I poked myself with the serrated tip. I bled a little on both occasions.

Cost: Around $20 at bedbathandbeyond.com, amazon.com, bhg.com and other websites.

Worth it?: I have a tiny kitchen so I’ll stick with my small, trusty knife.

Who needs it?: Gadget collectors, and people who think bigger is always better and have the kitchens to match.
