Farrington didn’t have its head coach Friday against Kaiser. The Governors also didn’t have any problem dominating the game.
Challen Faamatau rushed 15 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns and Farrington had nine sacks in a 43-0 victory over Kaiser in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament first-round game at Roosevelt.
“Challen, he’s just an outstanding athlete,” said Governors assistant coach Daniel Sanchez. “We just like to put the ball in his hands and he makes things happen for us.”
Farrington head coach Randall Okimoto missed the game to tend to a family commitment, but will be back next week when the Governors (6-2, 6-2) play at Campbell in a quarterfinal matchup, according to Sanchez.
With the victory Friday, Farrington is assured a berth in the Open or Division I state tournament.
The Governors took a 36-0 lead at halftime, with touchdowns coming from all three phases.
Richard Anderson had a 22-yard fumble return for a touchdown and Faasisina Masalosalo recovered a punt blocked by teammate Ayson-Jae Calip in the end zone.
Faamatau scored on 47- and 8-yard touchdown runs and Kingsley Moses-Sanchez caught a 24-yard scoring pass from backup quarterback Bishop Rapoza.
“Overall, we did good,” Faamatau said. “I wouldn’t be able to make touchdowns if it weren’t for my linemen. Tonight, my linemen did a terrific job and my fullback, my brother Blessing Umaga, and the receivers did well, too.”
Farrington capped the scoring on Iosefo Ah Ching’s 97-yard kickoff return to open the second half.
The Governors’ defense held the Cougars (1-7, 2-7) to minus-6 yards of total offense. Kaiser finished with minus-73 rushing yards.
“Defensively, they played lights out,” Sanchez said. “Offensively, we started off slow. There are things we need to work on offensively. Special teams, we did a pretty good job.”
Kaiser suited up only 24 varsity players for the game and a bunch more from the junior varsity were on the sideline, but saw limited action, according to Cougars coach Arnold Martinez.
“We know their style of play,” he said. “They’ve done it for years and they’re good at it. Give those guys credit. They have size, depth and are physical for sure. I think they’ll go far.”
