But Ganot would be required to reimburse the school a lump sum “equal to 50 percent” of his base salary at the time if he voluntarily terminates the agreement before its conclusion, according to an amendment.
The terms are contained in the new agreement signed last month and released Friday by UH and Ganot. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser had requested a copy of the agreement.
Under the deal, the annual base pay goes from the previous $225,000 to $270,000, $285,000 and $300,000 before reaching its $330,000 peak.
Even with the increases, however, Ganot will make slightly less in his final year than Gib Arnold, who has been UH’s highest-paid basketball coach. Arnold was receiving $344,000 when UH fired him Oct. 28, 2014.
For the upcoming season, Ganot’s salary is expected to rank no higher than fifth in the nine-school Big West, where Long Beach State’s Dan Monson was the leader in 2015 with a $341,562 base plus a $110,000 retention bonus, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The salary range for the position under UH policy is $185,000-$400,000.
Athletic director David Matlin said in a statement the extension is due Ganot because “Eran has created a ‘winning with integrity’ atmosphere.”
Ganot originally signed a three-year agreement in 2015 when he was hired to replace interim head coach Benjy Taylor.
But after guiding the ‘Bows to a school-record 28 victories and UH’s first NCAA Tournament victory in Ganot’s rookie season, he and UH agreed to a two-year extension meant to reward the just-completed season and acknowledge the NCAA postseason ban currently in place for 2016-17.
Ganot earned $75,000 in bonus pay for the season.
New language in the amendment also provides for a discounted settlement should Ganot be terminated without cause and secure a head coaching position at another school.
