Traffic backed up on the H-1 freeway near the H-1/H-2 merge in both directions after police closed all north-bound lanes of the H-2 freeway because of brush fires.

About a half-dozen brush fires that led police to close north-bound lanes of H-2 freeway this afternoon are “suspicious in nature,” a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

The Fire Department dispatched eight companies at about 2 p.m. to six to eight fires between Pearl City and the Ka Uka offramp.

Fire Capt. David Jenkins said all fires were brought under control and extinguished by about 2:30 p.m.

Police initially closed some lanes and then all lanes of the freeway.

The freeway reopened by 3:15 p.m.

Traffic camera images showed traffic backing up on the H-1 freeway in the east and west directions near the H-1 and H-2 merge.

“The fire is suspicious in nature due to the multiple ignition points and is under investigation,” Jenkins said. “The cause has not been determined at this time. The fire burned an estimated two to three acres of brush.”

No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported.

If the state had a good road maintenance program, the grasses and brush wouldn’t grow 4-6 feet tall so close to freeway. Instead they hire for contract at low amount and tell the contractor to just cut back the brush few feet into the roadside.

That’s the easy way to clear the grass is to burn it. You probably find out that someone scheduled to cut the grass decided to burn it. Happened where I live. Contractor had to clear about 20 acres and a fire mysteriously started at 4am. Or could of been a very heavy chain smoker.

Hope they catch the perps and then throw them in the fire. BBQ.
