Kunia truck fire, fuel spill snarl H-1 traffic
A rubbish truck fire and ensuing diesel fuel spill disrupted traffic on the H-1 freeway near Kunia on Saturday.
Police closed the left three townbound lanes just before 2:30 p.m.
Firefighters arrived shortly after 1 p.m. and found a garbage truck engulfed in flames, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Kevin Mokulehua.
The spill initially affected all five lanes and a shoulder lane, and an early estimate reported that about 50 gallons had poured out onto the freeway, Mokulehua said.
Firefighters called the state Department of Transportation to help with the cleanup, and the state contacted a private contractor, Mokulehua said.
