The inaugural Polynesian Bowl high school all-star football game will be telecast on ESPN3, according to an announcement Wednesday by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame and ESPN.
The live telecast will be blacked out locally, but will be shown at a time to be determined later in Hawaii on ESPN3.
The game, featuring 84 of the nation’s top high school seniors of Polynesian and other ethnicities, will be played on Jan. 21 at 6 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. Tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster.
Kanoa Leahey will handle play-by-play and Vai Sikahema will be the color analyst for the broadcast.
Hawaii golfers lead at RWI Invitational
The University of Hawaii women’s golf team holds the lead after the first round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Tuesday at the Leilehua Golf Course.
The host Rainbow Wahine had three golfers in the top 10, led by Izzy Leung, who is in third after shooting 2-under 70. Kaci Masuda is tied for fourth at 1-under 71, and Raquel Ek is tied for seventh after shooting an even-par 72. As a team, Hawaii’s score of 287 is one stroke ahead of Sacramento State, and two shots ahead of No. 27 BYU.
’Bows finish 17th at Makai Invitational
The University of Hawaii men’s golf team finished 17th in the 19-team field at the Makai Invitational on Tuesday at Makai Golf Club in Princeville, Kauai.
Senior Skye Funakoshi shot a 6-over 222, the lowest score for Hawaii, which finished the tournament at 40-over 904.
Mississippi was the champion by a wide margin at 33-under 831, finishing 22 strokes ahead of second-place Sam Houston State. Missouri finished third at 4-under 860, followed by Arizona State (2-under 862) and Louisville (1-under 863).
Koenig leads Sharks past Academy of Art
Hawaii Pacific University’s Sven Koenig scored two goals in the final 20 minutes, leading the Sharks past Academy of Art on Tuesday in San Francisco.
Koenig is the leading scorer in the PacWest with 19 goals and 41 points. Hawaii Pacific (5-6-4, 5-4-2) won its second straight as it begins a three-game road trip to close out the regular season. Academy of Art dropped its seventh straight, falling to 2-13-1, 2-9-0 in the PacWest.
Sharks score late to beat Academy of Art
The Hawaii Pacific women’s soccer team scored in the 73rd minute to break a scoreless tie and held on to beat Academy of Art 2-0 in San Francisco.
The Sharks (4-10-2, 4-6-1) took the lead on freshman Rhys Wynbrandt’s first collegiate goal, then added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute for the final margin of victory. Academy of Art (1-14-1, 1-9-1) dropped its eighth straight.
