In this Oct. 4, 2016, file photo, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck speaks during a news conference in Los Angeles. Beck told the Los Angeles Times on Monday, Nov. 14, 2016, that President-elect Donald Trump’s vows to deport millions after taking office will not affect his department’s longstanding policy of staying out of immigration issues.

Los Angeles » Los Angeles police chief Charlie Beck says President-elect Donald Trump’s vows to deport millions after taking office will not affect his department’s longstanding policy of staying out of immigration issues.

Beck told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/2fc3QSY) on Monday that his officers are “not going to engage in law enforcement activities solely based on somebody’s immigration status.”

Beck says it is not the LAPD’s job to work in conjunction on deportation with Homeland Security, and that’s not going to change.

It has been department policy for decades not to initiate contact with someone solely to determine whether they are in the country legally.

During Beck’s tenure he has avoided turning over people with questionable immigration status who are arrested for low-level crimes.

  1. Ronin006 says:

Beck is talking tough, perhaps to not offend the LA mayor, but he will quickly change his attitude when Trump cuts off federal funds for LA for not cooperating with federal immigration officials.

    • Ronin006 says:

Incidentally, the Federal government has never asked state or municipal law enforcement agencies to “initiate contact with someone solely to determine whether they are in the country legally.” What they have asked is that ICE be contacted when an arrested person is determined to be in the country illegally. That is what some police departments are refusing to do.

He wants to keep his job. Hispanicks will demand he be fired if he helps to deport them. I say you don;t have to deport illegals. Just make them verify legal status when applying for a job or when going to the doctor’s office and when renting a place to stay. They will have to self-deport to survive. Making English the long overdue official language of the USA wiill get rid of legal Hispanicks. Hispanicks see the “Anglos” as their hated historic enemies and the English language as the language of their enemies. No way will they ever accept living in an officially English spekaing country. As it stands now, Hispanicks rise up and threaten any politician who dares propose making English our official language, just so they can play their defiant charade and claim they don’t live in an officially English speaking country.

They can stay sanctuary cities, less funding for them, more for other cities. What these cities don’t control are roadways, trains, airports. Federal funding pays for lots of highways to include paying law enforcement to States. Airports are another, have to have federally recognized ID, no ID, no travel….. in fact TSA is a sister agency to Customs Border Protection , TSA does notify immediately when fraudulent IDs are detected and there is a immigration status nexus. Lots of federal funding goes into airports, they will learn….. the hard way.

  2. South76 says:

ILLEGAL immigrants with crimes in mind to be forewarned you will be deported to your country of origin when caught. LEGAL immigrants should have no fear with the incoming government, it is those ILLEGALS that should be afraid.

  3. Tempmanoa says:

Los Angeles is not the only City with a police department with a similar policy. A big reason is that if police are viewed as an arm of the immigration service for minor crimes they will have trouble getting cooperation from the community, witnesses and victims and this will actually become a tool for criminals who will threaten to report people to the police. Police need cooperation from the community to be effective– not more fighting and anti-police garbage. Why make it harder for the police?

    • PinkSushi says:

OK, you got me totally confused now. Hispanicks say they “just want USA law to be upheld” when they readily sue companies when they get passed over for top jobs in the USA. They say they just want Affirmative Action laws to be enforced. OK, let’s just do what they want, to uphold USA laws and then deport them. But then Hispanicks will say they have a moral duty to ignore unuust laws in the same manner p0polos did when refusing to sit at the back of the bus. Then you point out to them how up until the mid 1800s in N America, Spaniards would send out seek and destroy teams to massacre “illegals”.

That failure to cooperate myth has been debunked many times. The illegals still refuse to cooperate and say a peep about any crimes as the massive cartel will execute any talkers. Fact is, the LAPD is under staffed to handle the estimated 120,000 gang members in LA. If the cartel back home in Mexico tells the gangs to go out and kill the cops, Beck knows he and his PD dept are dead meat. The LAPD has zero control over the situation there as the gangs tell the LAPD who is in charge so the cops just go about their merry way ignoring the mass drug deals and hits on other gang members. They allow it to happen, they call it a village matter, let the villagers handle the problem to their customary/cultural ways.

This is Over reaction on Chief’ Beck part, I suggest he waits and see what Pres. Donald Trump intentions really are! Chill out bro!
Is it me or what?…isn’t Chief Charlie Beck a law enforcement officer, who’s job is to “enforce and Uphold the Law”?….is it me? What is the definition of the word “Illegal”?
If he is unable to do the job of enforcement, then maybe he should turn in his resignation?

The Police department of these disgruntled states are not obligated to help the Feds or ICE to arrest and uphold the law.But what it really comes down to, is this,it will eventually mean denying federal funds to that State/Sanctuary Cities and………. the county of Los Angeles!

  5. residenttaxpayer says:

All it means that their contact won’t be solely based on the person might be an illegal immigrant …the police administration probably doesn’t feel it’s their responsibility to enforce immigration laws and that is a federal responsibility…..

  6. wrightj says:

“Deport millions” and the Wall – Trump’s delusions of grandeur.

  7. coyote says:

This newspaper being so liberal won’t print the real truth and that is the majority of
police in the nation WILL be behind deportations of illegals.
