Sophomore opposite Stijn van Tilburg and freshman hitter Austin Matautia each put down 11 kills as Hawaii defeated SportConX 25-20, 25-21, 25-12, 25-17 in a men’s exhibition volleyball match Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Redshirt freshman middle Patrick Gasman was in on five of the Rainbow Warriors’ 10.5 blocks, and senior hitter Kupono Fey had three of the team’s six aces. Freshman Rado Parapunov added nine kills when playing two sets.
Hawaii baseball team signs 8 players
The Hawaii baseball team has received National Letters of Intent from eight players for the 2018 season, the school announced Tuesday.
Five are high school seniors, including two from Canada in right-handed pitchers Cade Smith (6-foot-6) and Sam Shoemaker (6-2). UH also signed infielders Aaron Gerdes from Millard North (Neb.) High and Johnny Homza of South Anchorage (Alaska) High along with LHP/OF Jeremy Yelland from Central Valley (Wash.) High.
UH also signed junior college pitchers Scott Bellina (5-11) from South Florida State College, Kyle Hatton (6-4) of Riverside (Calif.) City College and Austin Rubick from Ventura (Calif.) College.
UH softball team signs 6 for 2018
The University of Hawaii softball team announced the signing of six players for the 2018 season on Wednesday.
The Rainbow Wahine received National Letters of Intent from pitchers Emily Klee and Dominique Martinez, first baseman/outfielder Morgan Parsons, third baseman Merilis “Mama” Rivera, outfielder Brittnee Rossi and outfielder/third baseman Sami Thomas.
Rivera, a senior at Mililani, was a second-team All-State selection last season, when she hit .444 for the Trojans, who finished third in the Division I state tournament. Klee, from El Dorado High School in Placentia, Calif., adds a left-hander to the UH pitching staff. Martinez is a right-hander at Othello High in Washington and can also play in the infield and outfield. Parsons hit .348 with five home runs and 22 RBIs at Grand Terrace High School in Riverside, Calif. Rossi hit .552 as a left-handed slap hitter at San Benito High School in Hollister, Calif. Thomas is a senior at Coppell High School in Texas and hit .333 last season and was named the team’s defensive most valuable player.
Chaminade drops season opener
The Chaminade women’s basketball team dropped its home opener to Central Washington, 64-40 at McCabe Gym.
Lilia Maio scored a team-high 10 points for the Silverswords (1-0), and Jasmine Edwards had a game-high 15 for the Wildcats (3-0).
