Fans of the popular Island Lava Baker’s Brittle — cookie thins with a chiplike crispiness — will no doubt find room in their hearts for yet another flavor in the line: Java Lava, studded with pieces of crystalized dark coffee, coconut, almonds and macadamia toffee, and now available at a wider number of retailers.
Kitchen tip:
To get the grime out of a manual can opener, run a paper towel sheet through the mechanism. It will clean both the blade and the gear. This is a good way to clean a can opener without getting it wet, which can cause rusting.
It joins the company’s Passion Fruit, Brownie Mac and Coconut Tree offerings, which had been sold only at warehouse clubs and the Navy Exchange. Four-ounce bags of the brittles are now available at Times Supermarkets, Foodland, Don Quijote, Longs Drugs, 7-Eleven, Tesoro, ABC Stores and KTA Stores.
The three original flavors are also sold at Costco, Sam’s Club and the Navy Exchange in larger 12-ounce bags.
The brittles are produced locally by O Hawai‘i Island Lava. Visit islandlava.net or call 682-7066.
Hotels offer mochi pounding for new year
Welcome 2017 with a cultural holiday activity this week, compliments of Sheraton Princess Kaiulani and the Royal Hawaiian.
Both hotels offer mochi pounding in partnership with the Tenrikyo Mission Headquarters of Hawaii.
The Japanese New Year tradition celebrates the sustenance of rice. The communal activity of pounding the grains into one mass represents the bonding of individuals — each grain signifies one soul — as well as the binding of the present to the past.
Mochi pounding at Princess Kaiulani runs 10 to 11:30 a.m. today at the Dolphin Lanai, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Royal Hawaiian’s Monarch Terrace.
Also: From 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, the Royal Hawaiian celebrates Makahiki, the ancient Hawaiian festival honoring Lono, the deity of peace, productivity and harvest.
