Chyel Palmer scored 16 points as Leilehua rallied past No. 8 Mililani 46-41 in a pivotal OIA West matchup at the Mules’ gymnasium on Saturday night.
The rivalry game included a noisy Mililani crowd that saw Leilehua (7-1) move into sole possession of first in the West thanks to Nanakuli. The Golden Hawks knocked off Radford, giving the Rams their second loss.
Leilehua has Kapolei and Pearl City remaining on its schedule. Win both games and the Mules will clinch first place and a first-round bye in the OIA Division I playoffs.
“That would give us more time to prepare, to heal up and rest,” said sophomore point guard Kaylen Kamelamela, who scored six of her 10 points during the crucial fourth quarter. “But we can’t take any team lightly and get complacent.”
Senior Shaylee Todani hit both of Leilehua’s 3-pointers and finished with nine points, and freshman Kimberly Owens was everywhere on the floor. Owens had four rebounds, three assists and a steal to go with her three points.
The visiting Trojans (6-2) could have moved into the driver’s seat with a win. It was a disappointing loss on different levels. Coach Patrick Basilio was unsatisfied with the officiating.
“Both teams are playing out their hearts and it was one of those nights. Some unfortunate mishaps on the court,” he said.
Palmer scored eight points in the opening quarter, but sat the remainder of the first half with three fouls.
“We had them where we wanted them,” Basilio lamented.
Center Cheyenne Ardona and guard Kayla Torres led Mililani with 10 points apiece. The visitors missed 12 free throws (16-for-28). That included 3-for-7 shooting at the charity stripe in the final quarter. Mililani had a 34-28 lead entering the fourth, but Leilehua surged ahead with a 12-4 run.
Todani’s wing 3 tied it at 36, and Palmer’s 15-footer from the wing was all net to give the home team the lead for the first time since the second quarter.
Mililani was within 40-38 after Torres hit two foul shots with 2:02 remaining, but the Mules got a free throw from Kamelamela and a huge offensive board by Owens. That led to two foul shots by Kayla Posiulai. The Trojans missed two of three shots from the line, including a 1-and-1, while Owens and Kamelamela added more charity shots to extend the lead to 45-38 with 44 seconds to go.
Kalena Gibson (eight points) hit a shot on the low post to cut the lead to five, but Mililani got no closer.
Leilehua shot just 3-for-8 from the line in the first three quarters, but went 64 percent in the final stanza.
